I would never have believed that anyone could get a hide softer and more supple than our garment tanned bison hides which are awesome , but these are truly spectacular. They are however cut a bit strangely... ok, they are kinda weird shaped, so we are discounting them $500 off MSRP, and you get a deal on an amazing hide that would be perfect for making a coat or jacket or ??? out of. You will be amazed at how soft and supple these are.

Buffalo Robes make a stunning and luxuriously comfortable addition to your home or cabin. Use them as a warm rug, on top of your bed, over your couch, or just to wrap up in — as the Plains Indians and pioneers did whenever the cold winds blew.

Highest Quality

We only tan buffalo hides with the lush prime hair of deep winter. We skin carefully so that there are absolutely no knife cuts. Our hides are worked by hand and tumbled to be as soft or softer than any available. We've been tanning buffalo robes for 25 years. You can see our hides in dozens of museums and several movies. They are used by tribes and tribal members throughout North America, collectors and interesting people everywhere.

Totally Natural

Tanning can be very toxic. Most buffalo robes are tanned with synthetic tanning agents, formaldehyde or trivalent chrome. We use totally natural tanning agents (woodsmoke and plant tannins) that make the hides safe for you and your loved ones to wrap up in.

Sustainable

Unlike wild harvested furs, purchasing bison products encourages the raising and continued renaissance of this majestic animal. Buffalo primarily live on ranch land and their numbers are highly influenced by whether or not it makes more sense to raise buffalo or cattle. By making use of buffalo products, we encourage the continued restoration of the great buffalo herds of the west

Is it Washable?

Disasters happen. Most tanning methods result in hides that can only be dry-cleaned. Ours can be washed in warm water just like a wool sweater.

Is it Really Eco-Friendly and Non-Toxic?

Tanning is a highly toxic business. So toxic, that the majority of EPA Superfund sites are tanneries (more than nuclear sites!). Currently, the only known non-toxic methods for tanning hair-on hides use plant tannin, alum, or smoke. Unfortunately terms like ‘ecofriendly’ and ‘nontoxic’ aren’t regulated. We don’t advertise it up front, but our method has been certified organic since 2007 (Certification #OR-OTCO-CO-07-00955).

Every bison hide we choose has its own story; the natural differences found in the brands, rub marks, and scars are unique to each animal. We are often asked the best practices for caring for these one of a kind pieces. It’s easy, we promise! Here are some product care tips and tricks to ensure that your buffalo hide maintains all the uniqueness and elements that you love.

Storing Your Hide

We recommend keeping your hide outside of direct sunlight. Too much sun can damage or discolor the hair. The hide should be kept loose – compressing the piece could also cause damage. Never use plastic containers to store your hide — these can cause the hide to sweat itself and ruin the hide.

If you are using your hide as a rug, we recommend vacuuming at least once a week. To avoid getting the hair tangled, we typically use the vacuum hose instead of the vacuum brush. If you prefer your hide as a wall hanging, bedspread, wrap, or throw, vacuum as needed.
