More info on base yarns and fiber composition

This is a four-season sock, with great cushioning and support for standing in a river tossing flies at salmon, long hikes, hard hunts, and basically just keeping your feet dry and comfortable in most conditions.  They will stay fresh and funk-free for days on end... pack less, travel more.  Less bulk and better fit, not quite as insulating as our Trekker or Pro-gear socks, but built to take whatever you can throw at them and still keep you cozy.

The Buffalo Wool Co. Kenai Boot Socks feature:

  • URfit System for arch support and memory-knit construction
  • Smooth and flat comfort toe seam
  • Footbed is a luxurious bison down, ultra-fine merino, bamboo blend
  • Leg Shaft is an extremely comfortable military-spec polypropylene
  • Leg shaft measures
  • 2026 production uses a darker olive green color

These sock-creating geniuses marry military-spec polypropylene on the sock shaft with our close-to-bulletproof bison down/ultra fine superwash Merino wool, and a bamboo yarn blend in the foot. (The same yarn we use in our B.O.S.S. socks.)

Anyone who has ever worn a pair of military polypro socks knows how supportive they are, but you have never felt the footbed comfort and warmth of our bison/merino/bamboo yarn blend at the same time.

The result is the exact sock that the US Military uses, but with your feet surrounded by the warm, moisture-wicking, comfortable, durable proportions of our BOSS Sock. This Mil-Top sock is about 3" taller than our Trekker boot sock ... right at mid-calf ... and with the stay-in-place power of mil-spec polypropylene.

As for scent capture, we had one of our spec testers who claims to have worn them a ridiculous 12 days of elk hunting.  Now that would just be "Socks Abuse"!  But these are the top of the hunting/moving/walking sock food chain.  They are my "go-to" hard-wearing outdoor socks anymore.

      Sock Sizing

Socks should fit as comfortably as any other garment. The heel should rest on your heel—not under it (as with a sock that’s too small) or halfway up your Achilles (as with a sock that’s too large). The sock should be snug against your foot with no sagging fabric. The toe seam should lie flat across the top of your toes.

      Sock Heel at Your Heel
The heel of the sock should sit directly on your heel, not above or below it.

      Flat Toe Seam
The toe seam should lay flat along the top of your toes, not above or below them.

      Taut Across the Foot
Socks should fit snugly across your foot without any sagging material. If you wear wide shoes (E+), consider sizing up. If you wear a wide shoe size (E+), consider sizing up.

      Material Composition

Here at The Buffalo Wool Co., our yarn bases for all our gear is (and will always be) natural fibers. This means that the internal structure of your socks (the parts that touch your skin) will be made from bison fiber, merino wool, mulberry silk, and other 100% natural fibers.

The overall composition (the parts that touch your skin plus everything else) will include other materials like nylon or polyester. This is done to make the sock more durable and ensure that your socks work (and play) as hard as you do.

      Best Ever

The socks are soft and warm. I haven't worn them often but found they lived up to and beyond my expectations. Wore them while cleaning snow from my driveway and feet stayed warm. Not so much the case with regular socks. I also discovered that I can slip my cowboy boot off easier when wearing the buffalo wool sock. And additional and unexpected benefit. Being a person who has trouble with cold feet I have no doubt that I will be ordering another pair.

      Very comfortable, and cushioned

I'm not wearing military boots, but I've seen military standards are mentioned for these socks. I'm wearing uninsulated 6" work boots. Not chukkas, but work boots. I have pretty skinny feet.

These fill a significant amount of extra space in my work boots. It's not so much that it would make them feel tight, but actually improves the fit for me. There's quick a bit of cushion on the foot. I have found this helps when working on ground with a lot of unscreened rock.

If the cushion helps fill gaps in the footbed of your boots, this MAY help improve your own stability when walking on unstable/uneven surfaces. It's not as good as a fitted boot, but it's got potential for being a significant improvement over a loose boot with thin socks. They cling enough to the foot to stay in place (even on my narrow feet it's not bad), but it didn't feel constricting or overly tight.

The warmth is up there, but so far has not been hot. Still waiting on the desert summer before I can judge that. I like the other socks I've tried so far, but if this isn't extra hot in summer it will probably be my go to for work.

Strong yet soft. Tightly knit and grips the foot. Warmth without bulk. Can’t wait to see how long they last because they seem perfect to replace every other wool sock in the drawer.

Started with 2 pairs, now I think I've got 5 & ordering more. I work outside all day & these socks are amazing. I don't think I've worn any other socks this Winter at work or play here in Alaska, so well below 0°f

      Superb hunting/hiking sock.

Great heavy weight padding where you need it, and thin enough to not be to hot where you don't, perfect for cold to mildly warm weather hiking and hunting sock for here in Eastern Arizona where it can be well below Zero before sunup and 80 by noon!

      Great Scots! I mean, SOCKS!

Best socks we - hubby & I - have ever had - thick and warm and fit well (even over my more curvy lower legs). I usually have to wear socks inside out, as the vast majority have seams that irritate my toes, but none of the Buffalo Wool Company socks seem (ha!) to do that! We now have three types of BWC socks (times two, as I'm wearing the socks I ordered for hubby) every day, now that winter temps have come to our part of Virginia.
      Best socks, ever!
