Our newest midweight sock, just 100% natural fibers.  50% American Bison Down and 50% Montana Merino wool.

Sometimes a product idea just completely makes sense.  In the world of sock manufacturing, where synthetic fibers like nylon and spandex reign supreme for their stretch and durability, creating a truly 100% natural sock seemed like an impossible dream.

  • 100% Natural fibers 50% American Bison down and 50% Montana merino wool
  • No synthetic material, becuase of this the socks will wear out quicker. We do offer darning kits for repairs.
  • Made in the USA

We approached dozens of mills across the country, each one shaking their heads: "Without synthetics, the socks won't hold up," they'd say, or "It's just not feasible in modern production." Refusal after refusal left us wondering if our vision for pure bison and merino wool socks—free from plastics, chemicals, and any artificial additives—would ever come to life.

That's when Mike Caird, at the Knitting Mill in Liberty Hill stepped up like a beacon of old-school craftsmanship. Nestled in the heart of Texas, this family-run operation embraced the challenge with open arms. Drawing on generations of expertise in natural fibers, they retooled their looms and perfected a knitting technique that relied solely on the inherent strength and elasticity of bison down and merino wool. No compromises, no shortcuts—just pure, earth-friendly innovation.

Unlike virtually every commercial sock on the market, these do not use nylon overplaiting (or any synthetic reinforcement) in the heel and toe. Most sock manufacturers add nylon because it’s cheap, strong, and gives “extra wear protection.” We chose not to, these are pure and natural.. they are however slightly more prone to wear, especially in tight shoes.

A "true 2x2 rib" knit crew sock of the old-school variety, this sock has the great foot fit and stay of our technical socks. It is insulating, soft and cozy,  and wicks moisture away like nothing you’ve ever experienced.

Thanks to their dedication, our socks are now a reality: warm, breathable, and resilient, proving that nature knows best. The Knitting Mill didn't just make socks; they revived a tradition of sustainable textile artistry, one stitch at a time.

These socks are incredibly easy to care for, and due to their antimicrobial properties, feel free to wear them a few times before washing. But when they do need to be cleaned, simply machine wash warm, then toss them in the dryer.

Sock Sizing

Socks should fit as comfortably as any other garment. The heel should rest on your heel—not under it (as with a sock that’s too small) or halfway up your Achilles (as with a sock that’s too large). The sock should be snug against your foot with no sagging fabric. The toe seam should lie flat across the top of your toes.

Sock Heel at Your Heel
The heel of the sock should sit directly on your heel, not above or below it.

Flat Toe Seam
The toe seam should lay flat along the top of your toes, not above or below them.

Taut Across the Foot
Socks should fit snugly across your foot without any sagging material. If you wear wide shoes (E+), consider sizing up. If you wear a wide shoe size (E+), consider sizing up.

Material Composition

Here at The Buffalo Wool Co., our yarn bases for all our gear is (and will always be) natural fibers. This means that the internal structure of your socks (the parts that touch your skin) will be made from bison fiber, merino wool, mulberry silk, and other 100% natural fibers.

The overall composition (the parts that touch your skin plus everything else) will include other materials like nylon or polyester. This is done to make the sock more durable and ensure that your socks work (and play) as hard as you do.

Brilliant, soft, comfortable

I love these socks and I'm so happy I ordered them while I was in Montana - they arrived quick and before my flight home! I'm a UK size 7.5, EU 41, US women's 10 - so right on the border of Medium or Large. I couldn't find reviews which said which way to go, I went with Medium and they fit PERFECTLY. I hope this helps someone else who might be between sizes. They're fantastic, soft, comfortable, and warm!

I have just been diagnosed with Raynaud syndrome

I have just been diagnosed with Raynaud syndrome. My Pure Prairie socks keep my toes warm to prevent episodes.

Very soft and comfortable

Very soft and comfortable. They regulate temperature very well and I appreciate that they aren’t super tight around my calves so they don’t leave indentations on my leg like every other calf height sock. In my opinion these are pretty much the perfect socks. Only complaint I have is that the first pair had a knitting defect where there was a hole on the top of the sock and they tried to blame me for it saying I cut it while opening the package but that would’ve been impossible cause that part was covered by a cardboard sleeve which means I would’ve had to cut through the cardboard to cut the sock and the cardboard was uncut. I also opened the package very carefully as these socks are super pricey and I always take careful precautions with every package I open.

Exactly as advertised

Exactly as advertised. Very soft, but haven’t worn for long since the weather’s been very hot by me lately, so can’t attest to the cold or comfort much.

Another awesome product

The socks are awesome. I’m a diabetic and I appreciate the way they fit and don’t squeeze my feet. They’re extremely comfortable and soft.

Consider This...

Comfortable & easy fit. "Medium" thickness. Glad I got a few pair!

They are definitely warm and soft, but 100% natural means no elastic or spandex, which they really need. Can get slouchy in boots. Next time I’ll try a pair in a blended fabric. Good company.

Great 100% buffalo wool socks!

These socks have great moisture wicking and are very soft. They are a little tight to getting on, but they stay up very well for 100% socks and I really like that! Thank you for making these 100% natural socks. I am really in joying them!

Another Good Sock!

I’ve purchased several different products from BWC. This is another good quality sock I’m glad to have as an option. I’m sure it won’t be the last!

Jeremy

I already own a number of TBWC socks (gloves and beanie, too). They wear for years, and these new products seem to even beat the older ones I have. I love these Pure Prarie socks because they contain no plastic. The upper band helps them to stay up, and even though they don’t stretch, they are not difficult to put on or take off. They appear to be built very well, and although they’re a little thicker, they’re so comfortable and warm without added bulk. Very pleased. Would buy more.

Was a great gift

I got these for my mom for Christmas and she loved them. She especially liked that they were not tight on her legs, which I think is due to the old fashioned knitting style of these. It made them much more comfortable!

Love everything I have from BWC!

This is my 3rd pair of socks from BWC, and I ordered the size medium which turns out to be a better size for me than what my normal size is based on shoe size.
Love the high quality material and comfort.
Initially I thought it might be a little too warm for living in Houston but these and other socks I have ordered work well in cold or warm weather.
I guess it truly shows the versatility and greatness of the buffalo wool to begin with.

Thanks for making such great products!
I’m a huge fan

My favorites. . .

Just plain and nothing fancy. They get more wear than any of the others. Thank you for figuring out how to knit them!

More than a gift

After all the good things I had heard, I was excited to receive a pair of these socks. The same day they arrived, I talked with my father, who is in his late 70's and has suffered from foot neuropathy for several years. He mentioned that he had been having trouble lately with cold feet, which make his symptoms worse. The timing was too perfect not to gift them to him right away. He has worn them almost exclusively since then because they are so warm and soft. He plans on ordering another pair and I most definitely will too. Highly recommend!

Warmest socks ever

These socks remind me of the “Really Really Nice Socks” (45%bison/45% merino wool/8% nylon/2%spandex)I purchased @4 years ago. I have worn them for a week straight and don’t want to take them off. These socks are so SOFT and WARM-I wear them cross-country skiing. Please notify me when the Pure Prairie socks are available. I want to buy a dozen pair. Thank you.
