Compiled by the editors of American Heritage.  Just an incredible collection of (mostly) well written stories about all kinds of life "back then".  Soldiers and farmers, miners, explorers.

You've just got to dig in.  Relatively small print and 370 pages.  A lot of bits of history I had no idea about.

An exceptional (and it appears mostly forgotten) book.

"postscript"  I came to buy this book originally because of the scene on the cover; Stagecoach being attacked by Natives.  The credit for "Jacket design" went to Barbara Asch.  I came across it while looking for the 100th Anniversary Catalog of the Winchester Arms Company.  Here is a picture:

That dustcover is a part of a Norman Rockwell print that I had never seen before.  Where I saw it and why .... maybe later.  But the similarity teased me to buy the book.  Sure glad I did.

Oh; if anyone wants a copy of the Winchester Catalog ... just might have one for sale!

Some copies have the dustcover; most don't, sorry
