Cathay Williams aka William Cathay
Cathy was the only female Buffalo Soldier, posing as a man named William Cathay, at 17 she enlist in the 38th infantry in 1866. She served for two years in the Indian wars before she contracted smallpox when doctors discovered that she was a woman, leading to her honorabe discharge. She resumed her identity as a woman and travelled to Fort Union to work as a cook. She later moved to Pueblo, Colorado and worked as a laundress before settling in Trinidad, Colorado.
