Large Buffalo Hide rug
Every bison hide we choose has its own story; the natural differences found in the brands, rub marks, and scars are unique to each animal. We are often asked the best practices for caring for these one of a kind pieces. It’s easy, we promise! Here are some product care tips and tricks to ensure that your buffalo hide maintains all the uniqueness and elements that you love.
Storing Your Hide
We recommend keeping your hide outside of direct sunlight. Too much sun can damage or discolor the hair. The hide should be kept loose – compressing the piece could also cause damage. Never use plastic containers to store your hide — these can cause the hide to sweat itself and ruin the hide.
Cleaning and Care
Your hide is made for everyday use. If your piece takes a spill, spot clean as much of the liquid as you can. Then, simply use a clean damp cloth to blot the area. Cleaning solutions are too harsh for the fur, so avoid using them or saturating the piece in water. If your hide becomes matted, a heavy metal comb can be used to brush it out. We recommend a Scotch Comb for this.
If you are using your hide as a rug, we recommend vacuuming at least once a week. To avoid getting the hair tangled, we typically use the vacuum hose instead of the vacuum brush.
Love this hide.
I liked that it had the color differentiations that I asked for - blonde on top and then dark on the edges. Just what I asked for and extremely soft.
This rug is quite warm! Weather sleeping on it or under it. It was quite stiff when it came but is softening up with only a few days use.
We purchased (yet another) bison product from BWC and again were delighted. We chose NOT to use this as a rug, but as a winter bedspread in our mountain cabin for winter, on a full size bed as we often lose power and the wood stove is in the other side of the house. It fits a full size bed very nicely, with some overhang on the bottom. It arrived stiff and hard but also warm and beautiful. This is quite heavy - so if you are one who likes a weighted blanket this is naturally weighted. It took a couple of nights use before the natural leather began to flex more. We tried it fur down and fur up, and ultimately we are using it fur up, as a bison would do. It is quite warm and having the fur tickle your chin at night is great. We keep the end side at the top of the bed (it has a tail!). Quilts are all back in the cedar chest as we use a single flannel top sheet and the bison hide for warmth. It is beautiful and during the day, we just lay on the fur for reading, napping, etc. So comfy! Oh, BTW, shipping was fast! We recommend this wholeheartedly and my daughter now wants one for her cabin as well.
