A classic slouchy hat shape with a hem instead of the standard rib start – this hat is loosely based on the Voyageur hats of history.

This modern take on the classic shape is further updated with geometric patterns of squares and stripes in a gridline format. The slouchy shaping is then gathered up and embellished with a leather strap and wonderful detail buttons. The hem of the cap can have a message or name knitted in or be left plain - charts are available to knit in “Buffalo Wool Co” or there are blank charts so that you can create and knit in your own message!

Squares on Black

A fun knit- easy and colorful, while not intarsia- which I hate. I chose the black background, instead of sticking with the traditional natural. In hindsight it is almost too much contrast. I think I may have preferred the natural. The knitting is finished but I have not attached the leather strap- it is in the upper 90's here- I have time. I think I will like it this winter. I do wish the yarn chosen had more bison hair, I think it would be softer and warmer.

Loving this pattern

I bought the kit at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival 2016. I've been working away ever since. I've chosen to personalise my hat with my mobile phone number and name in case it gets lost. The main colour of the wool (Tracks, a creamy neutral) is wonderful to work with, and is so well plied that it actually feels like roving yarn. The squares are made with 10 mini skeins of Tracks, included in the kit. These are noticeably thinner than the main colour Tracks, despite the fact they're supposed to be the same product. I'm not sure why the coloured skeins are so much thinner, but it does make a difference when creating the squares of colour for the hat. Great value anyway!
